The Samsung UN55D8000 3D HDTV has all of the “bells and whistles” of modern day HDTVs, including web applications, built in WiFi, and 3D capabilities. One added feature on this model that we don’t normally see in other HDTVs is the razor thin edges, meaning the picture goes almost all the way to the edge. We found out during testing how important this is for our 3D viewing experience.
Not enough can be said about the picture quality. The LED 1080p picture is absolutely fantastic. This is especially the case when viewing 3D media through the battery operated glasses. The picture is extremely realistic, and for the avid sports viewer, the refresh rate will make your viewing experience that much better.
The screen is one of the highest contrast displays we have reviewed thus far. With the backlight on, the blacks will be darker than anything else in your room. The picture is fantastic if you are watching in standard picture, 3D, Blu-Ray, or HDTV programming.
The default settings on the TV are great, but if you want to get the full effect of the picture, you will need to adjust these. It isn’t that simple, and you might need to take your time in getting the picture for your room just right.
We found the Smart TV apps sort of lame. They aren’t extremely necessary, but an interesting feature, especially if this is your first internet based HDTV. There isn’t a ton of apps available, but you will be able to access the internet, or stream videos through Netflix or Amazon through this TV.
The audio is just average, and this is usually the case for TVs this thin. For a full viewing experience, you will want to connect a home theater system.
All in all, the UN55D8000 55-inch is a fantastic addition to the Samsung 3D lineup.
